AN ENDURING LEGACY FROM ONE OF THE WORLD’S OLDEST SHIRAZ VINEYARDS
Torbreck Vintners is proud to release The Forebear, a single-vineyard Shiraz grown from one of the oldest vineyards in the world.
'The Forebear' name honours the pioneering spirit of migrant families in establishing the Barossa as one of the great winegrowing regions of the world," said Hongell. "This wine is our tribute to those who came before us."
The 12 rows planted by Samuel Springbett and sons circa 1850 remain today a 1-acre pioneering site forging a living link to the early history of the Barossa and its connection to pre phylloxera European vineyards.
"When we acquired the Hillside Vineyard in 2002, rejuvenating the ancient vines was one of our highest priorities," said Torbreck's Viticulturist Nigel Blieschke. "It was a privilege to breathe new life into this historic site and we see it as our responsibility to continue the legacy started by the Springbett family."
Our inaugural vintage of The Forebear is from 2019, which Chief Winemaker Ian Hongell says was the culmination of over 10 years of work restoring these treasured old vines to their full potential. "The 2019 wine captures the intensity with restraint and purity we've come to cherish from these ancient, historically significant vines. It has an unmistakable sense of place."
The winemaking and viticulture retain the thoughtful traditions of Torbreck’s philosophy; with hand-harvesting, gentle processing techniques, 24 months aging in French barriques followed by a further three years of bottle maturation before release.
Priced at $850AUD, the 2019 The Forebear is available in limited quantities from 1st May.
1200 bottles were produced.
