MATTHEW JUKES 100 BEST AUSTRALIAN WINES 2022/23 matthewjukes.com
Torbreck #1
My Winery of the Year is Torbreck. Ever since Ian Hongell was appointed winemaker at Torbreck, the wines have sky-rocketed in precision, impact and detail.
The red wines have improved beyond all expectations, and the whites have also done so. From the affordable prices to the elite collector’s items wines, Torbreck pays as much attention to every wine, and it shows. The focus on the vineyards is the reason for the ramp-up in quality, and while you might expect to find Honky in the winery, you ought to walk the rows of his beloved vines first because that is where he will be. It is my honour and my privilege to announce that Torbreck is the '100 Best Australian Wines' Winery of the Year 2022/23

Torbreck #12
Best known for: Very full-bodied reds with shiraz front and centre, but also a leader in grenache shiraz mourvèdre blends, and RunRig is a pioneer shiraz viognier blend. Chief winemaker Ian Hongell presides over a bevy of beauties which are more elegant and polished these days.

JAMES SUCKLING | TOP 100 WINES OF THE WORLD 2022: jamessuckling.com
2020 The Struie #81
The black ink and lead pencil aromas are impressive with blackberry and raspberry aromas that are intense and fresh. Full-bodied, blackberry, blueberry and crushed stone. Flavorful and chewy. Lots of center palate here. Wow. This needs time to soften. Great structure and length.

2020 The Struie #4
2019 RunRig #31
Blackberry, blueberry and some spice aromas here. Sandalwood and cedar. Full-bodied with ultra-fine tannins that spread across the palate and show superb depth of concentration. Yet it’s agile and light-footed. Goes on for minutes. Tight still with illustrious depth and power.

2019 Descendant # 45
The “Mini-Me” of Torbreck’s renowned Runrig, Descendant sees some Viognier skins. It’s a perfumed and powerful wine, with aromas of raspberry tart, blueberry preserves, violet, cracked pepper and beetroot and a good lick of chocolaty, toasty oak. The rich yet sculpted palate is gripped by muscular tannins. It’ll soften with time and should age quite gracefully, but for now it’s still very young.

2019 The Factor #97
Plush heady notes of plum, currants and licorice open this powerful and
polished Shiraz. There’re also hefty helpings of savory, peppery spice. The palate is cinched by massive, drying, spicy tannins amidst the silky fruit. A plate of protein is a requirement if drinking now, but this really needs a few years— from 2035 onwards—in cellar before opening to soften those tannins. Then it could age gracefully for a decade beyond that.
