"The fruit is impressive, the oak luxurious, the texture velvety"
Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate
Fruit for the Laird comes from the Gnadenfrei vineyard, nestled on a gentle south-facing slope on the eastern side of a ridge separating the Seppeltsfield and Marananga appellations, in the Barossa Valley. Planted in 1958 by the legendary Malcolm Seppelt, the 5 acres of Shiraz is embedded in very dark, heavy clay loam over red friable clay. Over 5 decades the vineyard has been meticulously hand tended, unirrigated, traditionally farmed and pruned. The resulting small, concentrated Shiraz berries produced consistently on the property make it the envy of all winemakers in the valley.
Every great wine in the world has its roots buried in the terroir of a breathtaking vineyard
Once hand-picked and destemmed, the fruit is carefully nurtured for 6-7 days on skins until primary fermentation is almost complete. Following a gentle 8 hour basket pressing and completion of primary fermentation, the wine is run directly into new French barriques, coopered by Dominique Laurent, known as ‘Magic Casks’ and considered to be some of the finest barriques in the world. The wine spends 36 months in barrel under temperature controlled conditions. Once the oak and the wine have melded perfectly the wine is blended and bottled without the use of filtration or fining, where it matures for a further 24 months in bottle before release.
The Laird is a wine born from perfectionists following the highest possible standards
VINTAGE2013 will be remembered in the Barossa as the driest, earliest and quickest vintage in memory. Yields were generally below average but the overall quality was excellent, providing rich colour along with a near perfect balance of acidity and tannin.
One of the greatest examples of Barossa Valley Shiraz
2013 shows all the opulence and elegance of previous Laird’s, but with a complexity, precision and prominence that will make sure it ages gracefully for the next 20 years or more. Spices and meat with a savoury edge fill the bouquet held together with a tight tannin profile and generous oak.
The Laird of the Estate in Scotland is the Lord of the Manor and master of all he surveys
The Laird 2013 Vintage will be released in extremely limited quantities from 1st May 2018.
